What they say: AN INNOCENT GAME. A SHOCKING CRIME. A COMMUNITY FULL OF SECRETS.
Two little girls were out playing a game of dares. Only one returned home.
The ten-year-old told police what she saw: village loner Bill ‘Creepy’ Cawley dragged her friend into his truck and disappeared.
No body was found, but her testimony sent Cawley to prison for murder. An open and shut case, the right man behind bars.
The village could sleep safe once again.
Anna thought she had left Mapledon and her nightmares behind but a distraught phone call brings her back to face her past.
30 years ago, someone lied. 30 years ago, the man convicted wasn’t the only guilty party.
Now he’s out of prison and looking for revenge. The question is, who will he start with?
The Review: The most sincere of apologies for the lateness in the blog tour for today, I honestly can’t believe it happened but with all the sickness in our house lately the day for me to be on this blog tour literally just slunk by. I am so so sorry again and thanks so much to Avon for the book in return for an honest review and for letting me be part of the blog tour.
Our book begins in the eighties with some children doing dares. The scene is well and truly set and I felt uncomfortable and ready for something awful to happen. Fast forward to now and we meet grown up Anna whose mother has found something creepy relating to back then. I loved the way your detective hat had to be on from the off as you weren’t sure who the characters were-the children from before had different names to those now, and you weren’t in the know as to who the adults were. I would say that I found it useful to take stock early on of what characters were present and their involvement, as with the two timelines, one where we are approaching or at the day where one of the children has vanished from the town of Mapledon, the other the aftermath where people are getting creepy letters and strange moment of, there’s a bit to take in.
Also, while it is all a bit chilling, and the town of Mapledon has an air of claustrophobia to it, I never found it all too much, it was never too horrific for me and I immensely enjoyed the small town cocoon that was weaved. I was given full on shocks when some things were revealed and my eyes lapped up every single word as I guessed some parts, but was knocked off kilter with more revelations. I had heard of Ms. Carrington before and now I’m all in to become a big fan, as with a great setting such as this, characters that reel you in and non stop surprises, how could you not?! Very much recommended.
